The School of Business and Accountancy (SBA) hosted the annual Síkanàn Business Conference on March 12, bringing together industry leaders and third-year practicum students to discuss the role of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in economic development and sustainable business practices under the theme “Building Sustainable Filipino Businesses for Nation-Building.”

Among the speakers and sponsors were representatives from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), research institutions, and the private sector, along with the Pampanga Entrepreneur Producers Cooperative, the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) – Angeles City Chapter, PEPCo, and Buri Cu Buri Mu.

DTI Assistant Secretary Dr. Leonila Baluyut emphasized the vital role of MSMEs in the Philippine economy during her discussion. She noted that 99.63% of enterprises in the country are MSMEs, serving as major drivers of local trade and employment.

Baluyut also used the story of bamboo as a metaphor for business growth, reminding participants that “without strong roots, even the fastest growth can fall when challenges come.”

Meanwhile, Dr. John Paolo Rivera, senior researcher at the Philippine Institute for Development Studies and founder of Oikonomia Advisory and Research, discussed the importance of entrepreneurial strategies and stronger collaboration in strengthening the country’s business economy.

Furthermore, Mr. Byron Siy, general manager of TSB Realty and Development Corporation, also discussed the growth of their family business for over 54 years, sharing how his experiences and the company’s values can inspire and motivate future entrepreneurs.

Professor Joy Ann Evaristo led the conference with a question-and-answer session with the speakers. Dr. Loren Aina Trinidad, chairperson of the Department of Management, concluded the conference, while project head Mira Faith Alejo delivered the closing remarks.

During the afternoon, the Síkanàn Trade Fair filled the student center with booths from participating MSMEs, showcasing their products to HAU students and guests.

Despite the cancellation of two days of the event proper due to the four-day workweek adjustment at Holy Angel University, the Síkanàn Conference and Trade Fair still concluded successfully, highlighting Filipino craftsmanship and strengthening support for local businesses.
